welcome!

Value for value math tutoring, from anywhere in the world, paid instantly in bitcoin.

With bitcoin lightning network payments, learning math from the comfort of your own home has never been easier or faster! Offerings start as low as $40 for a one hour introductory session in lower level math courses. Contact me for custom rates when scheduling multiple sessions, or if you need help in more advanced topics/courses. You only pay for the time that you actually use!

I use the right tools for the job.

With a shared screen or whiteboard, it has never been easier for tutors and students to be, quite literally, on the same page! Using graphical computing software such as Mathematica, I can plot intricate, perfectly rendered plots of complicated equations and functions that we can both see and annotate on.

Learn from anywhere in the world! If you need help in a hurry, contact me and I can usually get back to you within an hour.

I have been tutoring math since I completed my first calculus course. It’s something that I enjoy and take an immense amount of pride in. I am currently a math PhD student with 6+ years experience teaching and tutoring math. You can read more about my qualifications on the about page.

Bitcoin allows you to pay me from anywhere in the world without any financial intermediaries, foreign exchange fees, etc. One big perk is that payments are cheaper, and I can pass the savings onto you!

Not a problem! In fact, you can pay me in bitcoin without ever holding any yourself. Please see this page for more info.

How do the meetings work?

All tutoring meetings are held over Zoom as most high school and university students have used it before, and in my experience it is the easiest to use and most featureful video conferencing application for remote one-on-one tutoring. You do not need to have Zoom installed on your computer, or even have a Zoom account, to join a meeting. In fact, you can join directly from your browser by simply clicking a link that I send you once you have scheduled a session. When you join the call, you can put any name that you like in the “name” field that Zoom requests. There are some benefits from installing Zoom on your computer (such as being able to annotate on each others’ screen), but it’s not necessary to get started. If you really don’t like Zoom and prefer an alternative platform, just let me know and we might be able to work something out.

Once we have both joined the meeting, we will take a brief moment to introduce ourselves, and then I will announce that I am starting a clock. At this point, the tutoring has begun! You will explain the particular problem or topic that you are struggling with, and I will do my best to help you solve and/or understand it until either i) you are satisfied, or ii) we run out of time. At the end of the session, I will determine the amount of bitcoin owed according to the time elapsed and the agreed upon hourly rate. Once we are both satisfied with the payment terms, I will generate and show you a lightning payment QR code or invoice, depending on your preference. As soon as you have paid your invoice, we will say our farewells and part ways (unless you want to schedule more sessions).

How do I book a meeting?

  • If you are all set up to use the lightning network for payments and need help in a lower level math course, such as calculus, linear algebra, or ODEs, book a one hour introductory session for only $40 by clicking the button below. We can schedule more meetings if you are satisfied with the first session and want more help.
  • If you would like my help in math but are not set up for bitcoin lightning payments yet, please read this page first. If this is all new to you and you would like someone to walk you through the process, click the “Book a session now!” button above and select the “getting started with bitcoin lightning network” option. This will schedule a short 15 minute meeting where I will do my best to get you up and running with the bitcoin lightning network. At the end of our session, to test that you have everything working, I will ask that you make a small payment to me over the lightning network. The amount is entirely up to you, and there is no obligation to pay if I’m not successful in getting you operational on the lightning network.
  • If you need help in a more advanced course such as PDEs or real analysis (or other proof-based junior/senior/grad level math classes), or if you want to schedule recurring sessions, please contact me via email or use the contact form. I will quote you a custom rate depending on the material that you need help with, and on the number of sessions that you want to schedule. I’ve included my PGP key for you privacy nerds out there.

If you want to try out lightning network payments after an introductory lesson on them and you found the meeting helpful, go ahead and send a few sats my way using the blue plugin here. I would really appreciate it.

You simply enter how much you would like to pay, enter an optional message, and then scan the QR code when prompted. Alternatively you can send sats directly to my lightning address, sam@lightningfastlearning.com, if your wallet supports it.
